I'm new to this online wrenching tips but it seems usefull.
I have a 97 powerstroke manual 5 speed 218000 miles on her. Edge cts, downpipe to 4 inch, fpr shim, dyi filter, have the fuel filter houseing unrestriceted, both bank fuel bolts drilled out, dyi high idle. The truck runs great down the road but acceleration is where I notice it studder don't build much boost I do need to replace my up pipes they do leak, sometimes when I let off the clutch it will almost die but then just as fast it comes back up to idle... Any suggestions???
I was told not to reuse the pipes because its more or less a gasket that is built onto the up pipe. Did disconnect the icp sensor and noticed no diff in engine.
I noticed you said it did stutter, a stutter is usually HPO related. Do a free rev in park, mash the throttle and let us know if it pops around 23-2500 RPM. if so then you need new injector orings. I have seen plenty of trucks grenade the oil rings at low and high mileage.
Hpop is fine. It's not so much a stutter as it is almost like a carb flooding out. If I ease into the pedal it doesn't do it but a quick mash to accelorate when not rapped is when it occurs. Like I said the pre turbo leak is a prob but was wondering if there could be something else. When I fix the turbo here shortly I'm gonna just go ahead and replace the fpr,&icp, and also clean filter housing and fix the typical leak or should I put a banjo block in it?
What is ur opinion on stage one injectors. Was gonna put a one inch houseing on it but I might just go with alil bigger injectors. It's not a race truck I just want a great puller.... Suggestions ???
What exactly do you mean when you say that the fuel filter housin is "unrestricted"? Have you checked the fuel pressure at the regulator?
And I would second the recommendation that you should try a free rev in neutral and see if it stutters around 2300 RPM. It doesn't mean that the HPOP is bad, just that you may be losing some oil past a few blown o-rings on the injectors.
I guess I should have made comment the fact that I know these engines very well I'm not a rookie mechanic by any means I have home tested everything that I can. That being said never in my life have I experienced a turbo going bad in a truck of mine and am pretty sure that could be happening I made a home made boost gauge 7 lbs is it I know I have a leak but that much? Unless there is a massive one behind the motor that I cannot see
Gotcha. I would still check the MAP and fuel pressure and yeah, if the leak is a substantial one, I could see the turbo maxing out at 7 PSI. Worse come to worse, pull the intake off of it and give the turbo shaft a wiggle. If the turbo is gone you'll have lots of endplay.
