Weird engine noise

So I was coming home from school today and went to take off from a intersection and the engine sorta bogged down and sounded almost like a heavily loaded power stroke or like the DT466 in my dads dump truck. After I gotta rpms up and by the time I was in fourth gear it sounded and ran fine the rest of the way home. What's going on here?

possibly air in the fuel, possibly a clogged fuel filter, or maybe a good dose of diesel kleen will clear it up - start simple
and of course, check the fluids just on principle
