I drive a 1999 ford ranger and can't figure out why my 4x4 won't ingage. I have vaccume all the way down to the hubs and when I turn the switch it sounds like the transfer switch is ingaging but the 4x4 still doeant ingage. What do you all think could be the issue? I thought about just putting a set of the manual locking hubs on it and just be done with it.
If you have vacuum all the way out to the hubs, then it could be that the hubs themselves are not sealed. There are O-rings that can break down over time and allow for leakage.
Have you pulled the hubs off and checked them out? If it looks even a little dirty inside then you have a hub-seal leak. That's what happened when my 4WD failed.
You have three options:
1. Keep the original hubs. Purchase some new O-rings from Ford. Remove the hubs, clean them up, re-install with new seals and then cross your fingers.
2. Keep the original hubs. Remove the hubs and modify them to be engaged full-time. This is what is called a "constant-engagement" 4WD system which relies only on the transfer case to shift in and out of 4WD.
3. Replace the original hubs with AVM manual lockers which allow for free-wheeling front hubs when your not using 4WD.
