How do I know which cable and gear I need? The speedometer cable I have now is not hooked up, and the end of the cable sleeve is trashed, so there is no gear.
The gear is not attached to the cable. It sets just below the cable thread fitting in your transmission. There are two gears, a driven gear and drive gear in the trans.
If you have the parts illustration and text parts catalog (available on evil-bay for ~20.00)
You could Match your axle ratio with your tire size and then determine witch two gears will give you the most accurate speedo reading.
If you don't have the catalogs, post your info here and we may be able to help.
I'm not having any luck with that link. I have a 4 sp going in my '59 and need a cable too. I'm also having a hard time locating the metal driven speedo gears. Fortunately I have 19 thru 22 teeth gears so hopefully something will work

Just went through speedo cable ordeal, and I believe Mac's has them. My cable was broken off internally and seized. I managed to do a lot of cross referencing and found out Oreilly carries a Pioneer brand cable for our trucks with t98 four speed, the part # is CA-3004 and they actually had several locally. It is the same length and has the same fittings. Hooked right up. Don't forget to lube the cable. I used brake caliper grease thinned with sewing oil, because it is high temp and has graphite and moly in it. Some people use white lithium grease.
I found the cable by typing in the original part number on Rock Auto and cross referenced it to a dodge part number which is the same replacement cable.
I bought a new 4 speed speedometer cable from LMC I think. The old cable was making my speedo needle jump right and left. I had also gotten another speedometer when I bought an instrument panel on ebay to use for parts that I needed. I got a little tube of cable lube at O'Reilly's and soaked it good. But after I hooked it up and drove...the new cable and speedo was doing exactly the same thing the old one was....jumping left to right. I'm not sure what to do now....I've got it disconnected for now.

Thanks! I picked one up this afternoon. It'll be a few days before I have time to do the swap.

Good deal you are welcome, and thank goodness for RockAuto's crazy parts list. I was glad I got one locally. My truck is non-concours (sp) beater/unintentional rat rod so I really don't care too much it's not original.
Jason; the cable my truck is 109 inches long it should have long easy bends. Ford part number C3TZ-17260-L for the cable and core.
A quick search of the net found F100 - F150 - F250 - F350 Series: 1957-1966 (1724)
But other came up, like rear counter ECT.
Good luck in your quest!

I have the 4 speed in my '58 with a 292.
DRIVE gear on output shaft, DRIVEN gear at end of speedo cable. One needs to know the trans type, axle ratio, tire size and 1959/60, whether 2WD or 4WD to figure out which gears are correct.
The problem you're going to have is, you have a 1958 with 4WD. Factory installed 4WD introduced in 1959, so there's no parts catalog applications for either speedo gear or the speedo cable.
I'd like to help you, but I'm not a Screamin' Eagle nor do I have a direct line to the heavens.
Not trying to hijack but a related question. With these screw on ends at the trans, which pulse gen will I need if I elect to go with an electronic speedo? Is it the same size as the GM?

Bills comment, made me think!
You are trying to connect to the transfer case correct?
If not, then even if you get the right gears it won't be accurate in low range. Also by using the transfer case speedo output. You can use an OD trans without changing the drive or driven speedo gears.
Just a thought
