1996 PS.Check engine

My 96 had the "check engine" light come on yesterday. It lacked power and would shut down occasionally. It would always start back up. Please advise.

1996 Power Stroke - CHECK ENGINE

"Check Engine appeared at start up. Power was poor and engine produced some sooty black smoke. Engine shut down occasionally, even at idle, but would always restart. Please advise
