I have a 1996 F-250 that runs rough and rich. Seems to be getting worse everyday. Did tuneup and tested some suspect sensors to no avail. Check engine light has never came on. Blows black smoke and soot out the tailpipe and wants to stall when starting out from a stop. Any suggestions of where to start checking would be appreciated. Thks.
Sorry about that, I thought I put the engine in there. Its a 5.8 liter with 5 speed manual. My chiltons says that starting in '96 you need a scan tool to retrieve codes on f series trucks. is that true?
Check the fuel pressure. I bet the fuel pressure regulator is bad. You should have around 40 PSI at idle. You could also pull the vaccuum line off of it and see if theres fuel in the line. That also indicates a bad one. Let Subford read this and he'll post pictures of what you need and where it's at, because he is a God like that!

Thks. that seems like a popular thing to check from what i've been reading. Ill check it out in the morn and see if i have to find a steep cliff to drift her down. LOL.
A restriction in the exhaust most likely would not cause it to run rich and blow black smoke. If anything, it would keep it from doing that. Not only that, but it stalls on him when hes at a stop, which the truck is at lower RPM's, and not able to burn all the fuel. If he was having trouble at high speeds with the RPM's high, I could see it, but not here.
checked the fuel pressure and found it to be 85 lbs! Installed a new regulator and it runs like a dream. Simple fix for a change. I just hope my oil didn't get to contaminated with gas. Changed it and gave her some lucas. Time will tell.
I wish it was raining here. I had to work up around the northeast side of Mt Gilead today, just south of Mansfield, and it was hotter than the devil. But what can ya do? Hopefully some of that rain makes it's way down here.. the corn here looks like mangled hell.
