Just a quick update concerning the 5R110W lockup problem. I Changed the TCC solenoid and no luck it still locks up until it gets warmed up. So I removed the transmission and I am going to take it completely apart till I find the cause of this problem. This problem is starting to test my nerves. So I will update when I see what is going on.
OK here is an update on the 5R110W lockup I found the problem !! I took the pump apart and found that the pump wear plate was replaced with the wrong one I noticed the transmission had a replacement converter and the pump body was painted black so it was replaced also. There was a mismatch of the wear plate to the pump stator or cover the wear plate blocked exhaust oil that went to the converter clutch control valve so when cold oil was thicker causing very slow drain back and delaying the release of the converter clutch. When hot or warm the oil was thin enough that it would bleed off enough so the converter clutch control valve spring would over come the oil pressure and release. Since the wear plate was the incorrect one the converter clutch would never complete it's release and would cause the engine to idle a bit slower. Now the idle is normal the truck has more low end power and the shifts are smoother.
This is a new tid bit of news for Mark Kovalsky the transmission man he may be interested in this.
Yes I am! Thanks for reporting what you found. I don't have a lot of experience with misbuilt transmissions. I'm much better with correctly built transmissions that have problems.
I am glad you take an interest in some of the problems people are having with the 5R110w transmission I have been working on transmissions for 40 years and have seen some strange things but the 5R110W I have not ever had one of these apart. I Bought all the rotunda special tools for this unit (not cheap) and dove into this unit for the first time. This unit must be a take off from the 4R100 and no parts interchange from each other. If left alone without any modifications the transmission works quite well but some people with diesel engines just have to fiddle with their engines to get more power and without shift timing concerns cropping up because of the increased power and stress put on the transmission your looking for reduced dependability of the transmission. These new diesel engines put out very good power in stock form why anyone would try to increase engine power for their street driven machine is beyond me. Vehicles are designed to provide good power fuel mileage, low emissions and dependability.
What people do not know is if you tamper with your vehicle in any way that changes the original design intent then you are in violation of the Clean Air Act. Some states will remove the vehicle from being driven on the roads and since it is a Federal crime to tamper with the factory build the Feds can and will if they find out will put a nasty fine on the person that does it. I know some states have inspections every year to check exhaust gases and for aftermarket devises that render the vehicle that was certified under law illegal. I do know of one legal case where a shop changed a transmission to an older one that did not have the electronic controls. This changed the way the engine ran the owner had exhaust systems replaced several times had poor fuel mileage and poor performance. The end result an unhappy customer and a shop that got a hefty fine for tampering with a street driven vehicle. You can't change things to suit your self without Big brother looking over your every move. Fact is Government now dictates how to build cars and sooner or later you will not be able to change anything under the hood.
if I may say so, You sound a little self righteous, when it comes to EPA CRAP. My 05 runs a hundred times better with my PHP programmer and FICM rollback. Just the increased throttle response, and having the power that my 03 had is worth it. The extra snap when I turn it up is just gravy
