I realize that this is a varied answer topic as to determine engine run time hours as idle time can fluctuate , although wanted to post this on here as i value the input of everyone on FTE. Let me present the dynamics to better understand why I ask this question. There is a 96 F450 that I might buy with 131k and it has a PTO on the ZF5 speed. This is a basic plain jane flatbed and whatever the PTO powered is long gone. On the dash there is aftermarket hour meter reading 8834 hours, and some switches with a sticker above aftermarket toggle switches for an outrigger control . Dont know if this an auto crane, boom lift or whatever else it could be. seems like the true engine hours of 131k should be 3000 hours or somewhere near. anyone know of a calculation for determining if actual run time is? I'm guessing somewhere in the 270,000 mile range, thanks for the consideration , Ronjon
Ideally you would like to see around 30 hours for each mile. That said, since its not a factory gauge you have no idea about a lot of factors that could skew that gauge, for example, it already had several thousand hours on it when they installed it. 8000 hours definitely seems quite excessive. Does our pcm not store hours? I know the SD does.
i did some general online searching and found that since diesels operate within 1500-3000 rpm range it could be calculated between by any number between 30- 60 (representing miles per hour) multiplied by mileage. As most PTO scenarios the engine doesn't rev upwards in the 3000 rpm mark. So as best and fair as possible I'm using the hours of 8834 and multiply by 30 ( represent medium idle @ 1500 rpm) = 265,020 miles . Actually 131k are actual miles so the real question is how many hours is 131,000 miles. Some how arrived with 3000 hours = 100,000 miles ( roughly) so lets say around 4000 hours of run time and 4800 PTO time. This is all guesswork although does offer some common insight as to the actual wear and tear on the motor. I'm open to correction as there is absolute variable in this approach.
The resident old guy in our Shop states that 20 thousand hours is over a million miles. We had an old 7.3 turbo with 22000 hours on it and the stories never stop. That being said. It works out to about 45-50 miles an hour. Now we are talking general wear on the engine not actual miles. I figure that's a pretty close approximation.
My truck has an hour meter since I bought it, and I dont know if the PO installed it since new or no. Now I dont remember what is it reading right now, but Im going to check and report later, its not my DD.
