2015 with 36K miles and 2082 engine hours

I'm looking at purchasing a 2015 with 36K miles but has 2082 engine hours with 773 idle hours. It's out of Canada and according to the CarFax was a "commercial" owner. Those hours are pretty high but is it big worry? I know the DPF can be an issue but aside from that is there much more to worry about with such a low mileage to engine hour ration?

Diesels must be worth more south of the border. When I last looked at trading mine the sales guy said it would go to a wholesaler and straight to the US.

Where did it come from in Canada? Oilfield truck? If it was it would have evidence of a PAS under the hood.

Looks like it did an avg of 28 mph when it wasn't idling

Looks to be southwest Ontario as there is records on the CarFax for "Ontario Ministry of Transportation Southwestern Ontario" and there are a few service records in London, ON. What it was used for I don't know and neither does the dealer as they bought it at auction.

This is what I thought of when I saw the miles compared to engine hours. For comparison, my pickup has 60k miles and about 2000 hours and 500 idle.

Miles / operating hours = average mph

36000 / 1400 = 25.7 mph
60000 / 1500 = 40 mph

What's with the check engine light?

It has spent 37% of it's life idling.

For reference I do a lot of city driving and I'm at 27% idle

Was wondering if someone was going to notice the CEL. I don't know yet and I haven't heard back from the dealer on what they found. The truck is 4 1/2 hours away so I haven't seen it in person yet and couldn't throw on my BT adapter and Torque app to see what was up.

I looked at a couple trucks just like the one you are looking at. Spring time here in western NY ALL of the ford dealers had fleet vehicles from Canada low miles high idle hours. I test drove 3 of them all xlts, crew cab short box white or black. All drove good. I did not like the high idle hours based on internet fear I had read about modern diesels with constant idling. I also found most of the interiors to be worn for the miles/age and smoked in. I am BIG on having a no smoker vehicle as I am very sensitive to the smell and wanted a cleaner truck then the fleet vehicles offered.

If the above mentioned items aren't a concern you should be able to fetch the truck for very a good deal! (All listed for around $36-38 here and sold around $32-35k).

Thanks for the feedback. I don't know about the smoke smell but from the pictures the interior is pretty good shape. If it's a heavy smoking truck it would be a no-go for me as well.

My concerns now are the number of engine hours and the current CEL.

You could easily make fixing the CEL part of the deal. I also made changing the fuel filters part of my purchase too since dealers have a habit of nuking all the paperwork from the previous owner and it's recommended to change the fuel filters semi-regularly.

The cel could be many things, I just had one on my 15 and it was the first exhaust temp sensor.

It's a Ford dealer so they are looking into the CEL.

my concern would be the dpf life. Other than the cel of course.

With heavy service I would insist upon a fresh set of filters and oil change. plus a new air filter. Check the air filter for the foam prefilter as well. With snow in Ohio you will want that. You would think it will have that from Canada but I would check that.

Check for a block heater too.

DPF life is what I would worry about as well Scott. The CEL I'm not to concerned with at the moment. It could be anything..

I'll look for the foam prefilter if I go look at it. As far as the rest of the filter I'll would change them regardless what the dealer does.

Wouldn't the emissions system warranty cover out to 100,000 miles and 5 years? It should be transferable too?

You would also have the ability to negotiate an extended warranty. I would, and I do, and I have always come out ahead.
