Noticed after towing my RV last weekend the entire RV front and sides were covered with black oily smeared specks. Looking further I noticed both the drivers side and passenger side of my pick up had the same specks that appeared to start from the front fender wells. Checked under the hood and seen nothing to indicate a problem. Seems to do it only when I tow. The truck runs great while towing, haven't noticed any other problems such as odors or noises. Any suggestions as to the problem? thanks. 2004 F250 6.0 with 82,000 miles.
Specks would be oil and a small leak at that. Check the bell housing and front engine cover to see if you show anything. Air flow can move the origin of a leak, grab a flashlight and really investigate.

Not trying to be a smart butt here, but I once owned a fifth wheel with a diesel. It was mainly white and got dirty easily. Just recently I have started noticing some of the new colors on fifth wheels and travel trailers, the blacks, browns and gray's...I am starting to like that idea.
It sounds like you drove through rain on a dirty oily road..
This mess often comes out the top of the front wheel well and then deposits residue down the sides. I've found having front mud flaps makes this MUCH worse since the flaps block the bottom opening and force water out above.
The lighted running boards on the Ex work great to keep the sides clean.
If your trailer has this on BOTH sides I'd suspect it's from the road, if it's ONLY on the exhaust side and behind the tailpipe - than it could be from your exhaust
