my truck started life yellow ..for the company it worked for,,body was dieing ..new body is red .. well at least what paint it had ..most of the paint burned off in the prairie sun the hood is redone .. looks nice .. but ..I don't think I'm a red kinda guy ..why or have you changed the color of your truck ??should I paint her the factory yellow that the first truck was ..or go with something new ?? how far do you go making changes befor you are a darksider ??an can you explain why this bothers me ..my truck .. my choice ..but ..I still need to ask you guy's an gals ....
Probably bothers you because you want stock or close to it. My struck started as green, then dad painted it yellow now it's primer heading to black satin. Final color will be Senergy green. My point is, your truck has made it almost 60yrs some thing even many will change be it necessity or mandatory. Just do what you want. I've changed the color in my head at least 4 times. I thing Darksider is more about changing away from what Henry built ie sheetmetal, motor, trans ect.
My truck was Silvertone Gray in 51. I have no idea when it was painted beige, but I don't like it. I'm not really excited about repainting it Silvertone Gray either, because I like red and blue and silver a lot more than the blue-gray which is Silvertone Gray.
Since I doubt I'll ever have a script bed to make her look stock, I probably won't worry about the stock color. Besides, this is never going to be a show truck, and only a handful of truck enthusiasts know where to find the paint code stamp on this truck anyway.
Do what you want. After it's painted, you're the one who has to like it.

I totally agree.
I have changed the color in my head a half dozen times. Right now I'm stuck on a medium grey with fine metal flake.
When I got it a few years ago (the 70's) it was rattle canned green. It was so faded the original black was showing through all over, giving it a spotted look. Then I primed it black. Then a few years later I primed it grey. I was set on maroon, then red, then...yadda yadda.
If it was a million dollar Dusenberg or Delahaye, then you'd kinda have to paint it the original colour to retain value. Our trucks are not high dollar vehicles, who cares about original colours, paint it whatever colour will make you happy.
Ours was originally Grey with Black fenders . P O painted it as you see in Avatar . Ian has chosen Med. Green with Black Fenders . The point is the right colour is the one you like best .
It's your truck, you need to do what makes you happy. I'm definitely more of a stocker, but I don't think changing the color would classify you as a darksider....well unless you went really off the reservation.
If you want to keep a stock feel, pick out one of the stock colors and go with that. Like Joe said, no one will know what the true original colors was unless you tell them.
