No, not always, it doesn't really matter what color primer is used. however if the paint being used is transparent it may get a pink tinge if not enough paint is used. I prefer grey simply because it's a lot easier to cover. The only reason why red primer is still made is because that's the only color it came for many years and the old school body men believe that's the color it should be.
Red, Grey, Yellow or Green in most cases it doesn't really matter what color it is, as long as it's prepped and painted properly.
