What is this part?

1991 Explorer XLT, auto, 4.0, 4 wheel drive. I can't figure out how to post pictures, so I'll try to describe the part the best I can. We were working on the gas tank and noticed what looks like an electrical plug/sensor hanging down. It plugs in directly above the rear end gears. What is it and what is it for? I have pictures I can send to an email if that would help....

Does your Explorer have ABS? If so, it might be a connector for the rear wheel speed sensor.

To post photos you need to upload the photo to a photo-sharing website (Photobucket, Picasa, etc), then insert the image link here.

If your tach and speedometer arent working properly, its the VSS.. (Vehicle Speed Sensor), if not, then likely the ABS pigtail.
