PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME

2003 F250 6.0L auto ECSB 166K auto trans- 4" turbo back magnaglow and bullydog CAI

was heading to work on the interstate doing about 70 RPMS at around 2000 and went to accelerate and noticed it blowing a little bit of white smoke and then it started rolling black smoke. pulled off at the next exit to check things out and noticed it was running rough as hell. decided to turn around and go back home. all gauges reading right and no CEL. when I went to leave I had to hold the throttle WOT to get it going when the rpms climbed to above about 1000 it rocketed off like nothing was wrong. got back on the interstate heading home and it seemed to run fine. just noticed a decent about of black smoke when I accelerated. when I got off at my exit noticed it running rough and doing the same thing at red lights. get it up above 1000 rpms and it seems fine. got it home and killed it and it wouldn't start back up. it tried and noticed it kicking over but just couldn't find an idle rythym. let it sit and started doing some research. went back out and fired up somewhat ok. it stumbled a bit but started and idles rough. I also noticed by getting my wife to give it a little bit of throttle that the turbo is surging and you can hear it in the exhaust( I have 5" turbo back) sounds kinda like squeezing the trigger on an air gun. let it idle for a few minutes and killed it and it wouldn't start back.......the only thing I have changed recently is the oil. put motorcraft oil in it. I did notice after changing it that it would stumble on idle every now and then but just wrote it off as maybe some dirty diesel. but I am on my second tank since changing it from different sources so I doubt its that at this point.

any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi spuds86, welcome to FTE!

I'm going to move this one down to the 6.0L Powerstroke forum, the folks down there will be better able to help you with this.

Starting with the basics .......................
What brand oil filter did you use with the recent oil change?
When was the last time both fuel filters were changed?
What brand fuel filters were used?
I assume you are not tuned and that you still have the EGR system intact - Is this true?
Have you re-checked the oil level after the oil change?
Do you have a scantool (the scangaugeII is a reasonable price and has quite a bit of capability)?

X2 what Mark said and I will add, it sounds like a bad injector as that is exactly how mine was acting when I lost my #2 injector. You will need to get the codes read, you can have pending DTC's without a check engine light. Did you use the same weight of oil that you have been using? Here is a video that shows why you need to use OEM filters,

Sounds like an injector to me too, but pull the egr valve and clean it up.

I am using ScanXL with ford enhanced. will be investing in the AE ford bundle soon though. Scan doesn't allow for 2 way comm I can just monitor everything. but it shows no stored or pending codes

Motorcraft 15w40 oil with a Wix filter(I have since learned that is bad and have a Motorcraft filter wating to go in. have to get a new cap though the one in it is a wix cap and the motorcraft wont snap in)

This was my first oil change since buying it. I don't know what was in it before or how many miles were on it. was curious if the oil could cause this much chaos being its the only thing that has changed since I bought the truck. that and I serviced the rear diff.

fuel filters haven't been changed since I got it. only had it a month and have slowely been getting all the service done to it and haven't made it that far yet. I wouldn't think this was an issue because when I can get it up above 1000 rpms it runs like a champ. also kinda leans me away from the dead injector as well.

it was suggested to me that the Cam sensor was bad..... I have seen these wreak havoc and not thrown a code. does anyone else think this may be an issue?

Can you run a power balance test with your scanner? It can point out a cylinder that isn't pulling its weight.

started digging around on it and pulled my oil filter and found little pieces of it floating in the oil.

I know I will prolly be crucified by some when I say this. but just for ****s and giggles I threw the old filter to the side and reinstalled just the wix cap(no filter) and started the truck. fired right up and idled ok(still had a little bit of a stumble but nothing like before.)

so I think Monday morning I will be at ford getting a new cap and will be changing oil.

Any suggestions on oil?

also want to go ahead and do fuel filters but ford quoted me something like 120 bucks for both. anywhere I can get a set cheaper but not buying el cheapo.... I heard something about Racor being the same filter?

If you have broken pieces off of the oil filter housing internals, you may need to replace the housing.
