Unknown black material on rear a/c condenser pipes

Can anyone tell me what the black spongy tar like substance on the a/c condenser pipes in the rear of my Ex are? It's is put on at the factory but no one at Ford or anywhere else I've been can tell me what it is. I'm relatively sure it keeps the pipes from sweating.

That's pretty much it, no real mystery sadly.

I haven't seen what you're talking about, but it could be cork tape... Its used on refrigeration lines as an insulation and to help prevent the sweating...

It sure is nasty stuff if you get it on your hands. IIRC, it covers the connection of where the pipes go through the floor.

I would try a local HVAC company, should have something like it. Any reason you need more?
