Blackstone OiA ?

Just got my report back from Blackstone.

They said my Iron levels were normal for an 8k oil change. I was running Rotella T6.

However they said my copper levels were high? Said to watch it and it can come from the Turbo bearing, but on a stocker this would not be true correct? Where would the copper be coming from and is this something to be concerned about? The copper level was at 18 where the universal average is 4.

The main turbo bearings are made of copper. When they start to fail, they are losing surface area to friction, which is picked up by the low pressure oil running through the turbo center cartridge they reside in. Yes, your stocker has the copper bearings. How many miles on your turbo?

Sounds like the excuse you've been needing to UPGRADE!!!

I can tell you from experience that a turbo can go from no shaft play to FUBAR in a couple hundred miles.

Grand scheme of things 18ppm of Cu over an 8,000 mile OCI isn't extraordinarily high. What are the typical levels of Cu your truck has been running?

Personally, I wouldn't go out and start throwing parts at the truck based on a sample of 1. I would just do your next UOA and see where the level is, if it is escalating maybe something is wrong (turbo, oil cooler, etc etc), if it drops it could be just a blip.

I didn't mean to be an alarmist, but if the turbo is suspect - I might check it more often. The only 'warning' I had was a puff of white smoke as I pulled into a rest area a little while before the carnage happened.

rufus is spot-on with his advice!

I think it is the new turbo wheel you put on. It's spinning your turbo shaft too fast. You may want to put the old ww2 back in and let me take this new one off your hands.

I second Rufus' advice. Keep an eye on it. Check your shaft play in and out and side to side, whenever you have that opportunity.

I'm not going to start throwing parts at it. I just wanted to know what to whatch. I have been 30+ on boost on my wot runs and I have been logging lots of data lately. In will be watching things and checking the turbo. I will also do another OIA on the next oil change to see if it was a fluke.

My Mercedes had elevated lead in a recent Blackstone OA. I backed off 1k miles on the next oil change interval and that one showed a drop in the lead ppm. Next one dropped even further. They thought there may have been a particle streak on one of the bearings, but since it trended downward subsequently, it put me at ease.

Well just let me know because I'm here for you. Whatever I can do to help that turbo last longer, even if I have to sacrifice.
