I had another question regarding the front leaf spring replacement on my 7.3 Excursion. A local spring shop is suggesting re-arcing the front springs and adding a leaf to give some extra lift. He also states the extra leaf would support an extra 800 pounds or so.
My questions are have any of you considered this option and if so are you happy with the results? What are the pros and cons of re-arcing opposed to V or X code new springs?
Thank you so much for all of the help. I have been learning a ton off of this site and I appreciate everyone taking the time to reply.
My primary goal is to improve the ride which is why I started looking at V and X code springs. Leveling the vehicle or adding a little lift would be nice secondary result. I went to a spring shop as I read of others getting the springs installed fairly reasonably. However, when I went there he suggested the arcing and adding a leaf. I don't know what, if any, the difference would be.

I raised mine 1 1/2" and it rides the same, are you looking for a rougher ride?
No. I wanted to know if there is any substantial difference between adding V or X code springs or having the current springs re-arced and adding a leaf.

X code will ride rougher than V code and an added leaf will make it rougher also but arching and shackles are the only way to keep the stock ride and shackles are the cheapest and easiest. Some people think a de-arched spring is a bad spring but not so, they aren't going to break. Shackles were the best thing I ever did to the truck.
Rearched springs have a memory and will eventally go back to stock hight. If i was going to pull them and and do all that effort i would just change them instad of rearching them.

That's what I figured and shackles are looking better all the time.
I was given a set of springs from a co-worker. The springs are from a F-250 with the 7.3. He has a leveling kit installed on the U code fronts and has A codes in the rear. His truck sits at the height that I like. Is there any reason that my Excursion wouldn't sit at the same height as my co-workers F-250? I will post photos once the swap is completed.
EXv10 has earned my repsect.
I read numerous thread conversations and decided to go the route of shackles. Guess what?, my ride improved too. my theory is that shackles lifted front end enough to give the shocks more travel room - - kept original springs ... shocks are 9000 xl's. Ride and look improved.
I will be putting a ranch hand bumper replacement on and I am thinking about thinking v codes. Based on comments above, I think these will work we'll? Thoughts? Any thoughts on replacement shocks, I have used Bilsteins in the past.

Well, what motor do you have? How heavy is that RanchHand (some of them sure look heavy)? How worn out is your front suspension (how close to the bumpstops are you now)? What, if any lift are you looking to get from the swap? Any work being done to the rear springs? These all the things you should consider before getting the new springs. If that bumper is as heavy as they look and you already have pretty beat up springs you may want to look into the heavier W or X code springs. Remember that the factory used the X codes for the snowplow prep package to counter the weight of a plow, much like your full time bumper weight when upgrading. The W or X option may get you a little bit more ride height to keep from bottoming out as well as better support for the new bumper.
