5.4L OIL advisory document for 10W40

I have a pic of a service msg that says 10W40 can be used by customers who complain of tick noice. the msg is oasis special service message 21217.

I would post a pic, buit guess there's no way of doing that.

Post the picture to flickr.com and then just put the link in a message if you are having trouble with FT website.

That's an old message, if you Google you will find plenty of references to it and pics of it. Yes, you can use 10W-40 if you have a cam phaser tick and it MAY help quiet it down. Then again it might not. Really, it's best to just use 5W-20.

I would try some High Mileage (dino or syn blend) 5w20- or 5w30 before anything thicker. I am happy with the results and the truck runs quiet. It was a little noisy on Mobil 1 full syn 5w20 earlier in the summer.

If the tick is at starting, as NCRED02 asked, switch to a the motorcraft oil filter. The problem will go away.

My sons 08 has over 60K miles on a mix of
5Qts M1 0W-40
2Qts M1 HM 5W-30
Amsoil Filter {once a year OCI}=11k miles

5.4L 3V has over 184K miles on her. She runs awesome! No odd sounds or clicks or clatter.

Just our experience! Nothing More! Truck averages 12-14mpg city 16-18mpg highway.

since posting this thread I switched to mobil turbo deisel 5W40 and tick is gone. The 40W when warmed up, seems to help keep the phasers pressurized.
