The Motorcraft filter runs around $24 at the dealer. I got several for around $16
from Amazon.
What advantages exactly are there to using a different product?

- Increased airflow without sacrificing filtration
- Increased horsepower
- Increased torque
- Increased gas mileage

What more would you like?

i had to open the air box to verify, but the Puroilator PureOne filter in my explorer was made in USA.

can't speak for sure about the one specific to the F150, but i'd say there's a pretty fair chance that it would be made in the USA as well.

I should have taken a pic of the whole filter. as stated above, they are a non-washable oil impregnated paper filter. i could not believe how much dirt it has caught after only a couple months. I'd say they filter VERY well.

I've always been a purolator fan. Their products have been solid and their oil filters are top tier as far as I'm concerned (especially when comparing filters on that Bob/oil guy website). What I really wished was out there was a Donaldson based filter that uses their power core filtering technology. Seems like it'd filter for far longer than the average panel air filters that are out there. The Volant units that make use of a Donaldson Power Core seem like nice alternatives to the K&N filters for users that already have an intake.

Check out your turbo blades.... K&N allows extra dirt into the veins, which wears them out prematurely... Ask me how I know... BAD news.

Ok, so you got lucky, so far... I am unwilling to take the chance (again) of having to replace a $10,000 motor for a little extra air flow, and I will condemn K&N filters on any forced induction motor, unless strictly a track vehicle, and especially on trucks that are commonly used in off road settings. There is a reason Ford will not warranty engine damage caused by K&N filters or other so called "Cold Air Kits" on the newer Powerstrokes. They would not warranty my sister's 7.3 that went **** up entirely due to her use of a K&N filter at 73,000 miles. (That is the whole motor, not just the turbo...)
I have stated in the past that K&Ns worked well enough on older, naturally aspirated motors, with proper maintenance. Hell, my wife's truck has one, and is still running strong at almost 200,000 miles (though her oil is nasty by 3,000 miles). However, turbocharged motors (like all new diesels and the gas Ecoboost) should NOT use a K&N if they see any off road use. The turbo vanes will get mushroomed.

^^^ this. google "dusted turbo" plenty of pics with worn out compressor blades. Just think, if it's sand-blasting the compressor blades, it's also getting into your engine. I never ran a K&N in my 7.3 for that reason. Ripped out the factory airbox on day 1 of me owning it and stuffed a NAPA 6637 filter on there.
