Exclamation Strange problem after oil change.

Okay I have a 2006 F-150 5.4 60,000 miles , Never once had any problems. I have always done the oil changes myself using 5w-20 mobile super and an S2 STP oil filter. Today, I did a normal oil change and once i filled it up I checked the oil it one last time and I topped it off just right according to the dipstick. And I also checked it after letting engine idle for 5 minutes. I changed the fuel filter also ( first time doing) but no leaks. I drove about two miles down the road, turned around and when I put it into reverse it idled really rough. It almost sounded like a thrown rod. The rpm's dropped to about 500. I put it into drive and gave it a little gas and then all was fine. Engine ran perfect. I reversed it at least 5 more times and it did it every time but always recovering when given a little gas. I also noticed that there is some oil splashed on the undercarriage like it was leaking going down the road. I checked the filter gasket and it was fine and intact. It idles great in park, drives great. Just reverse it dives down and vibrates like crazy.?
Oh, and after getting home I noticed that the oil level on the dipstick is a little less than a 1/4 inch over the correct level.

Sorry for the long post just really worried about my truck.

Thanks guys.

Get rid of that Super Toilet Paper oil filter also! Only use a Motorcraft FL-820-S filter on any ford modular V8!

When you changed out the fuel filter, did you by chance knock some connector off of some sensor.

Go over what you did and make sure you did do something by accident.

You should always check the oil level when the engine is cold.

Okay so the problem has come back, but completely different. It turns out the oil change was unrelated to my problems it was just a coincidence.( I think). After expecting the problem to be gone, once I got home today I noticed a significant rattling noise. It only rattles when the vehicle is in gear and driving BUT doesn't do it when in gear ( Reverse, Drive, 1,2) with brake pressed not moving. It does it in park, brake pressed or not. The sound it coming from between engine and transmission. But definitely not from the engine. I just cannot seem to figure it out. I just need to know if there's anything I should check before I take it off to the dealer and they wanna charge hundreds...

Thanks guys.

It's a 2006 out of warranty, don't take it to the dealership, find a good local repair shop and have them look at it.

Ask around work and friends and find out who they use.

Maybe a heat shield on your exhaust system?

Torque Converter? Based on your previous problem with no engagement & the noise that changes depending on whether it's in gear or not... Just a thought.

It sounds like it is coming from the torque converter, but its hard to tell because it is very loud when I get under there and try to listen around for it. Its almost like a piece of metal being thrown around. Increases with engine speed as well. I checked the cats, heat shields, so i guess the only way its gonna be found is if the trans. gets dropped.

Since you mentioned Torque Converter, have you checked your Tranny fluid level? Read the post quickly and I might have missed it.

If you're sure the sound is coming from the torque converter area you probably will need to have the tranny pulled to find out what the noise is. Possibly an issue with the flex plate or a bolt came loose.

What is your maintenance history? Have you done plugs? Over filling oil as much as a quart won't cause problems although this is not ideal. Also, I wouldn't go right to the torque converter or transmission unless you had it serviced recently. Torque converter bolts don't just back out after 60 000 miles. They will back out if someone messed with them or didn't install them correctly the first time. Your problem sounds like an ignition miss or fuel. Did you get a cheap filter or OEM?

So I took it into the shop and after looking and listening around it turns out that they suspect the cam phasers are bad. It may have been caused by the oil change but not sure yet. Quoted me $575 for the phasers, but whatever is "worn out" will need to be replaced when going back together. Willing to bet their gonna B.S me on that part for sure. Anyways I told em to go ahead with it. I guess I'll have to wait and see!
