another fuel pump problem

I used the search function, and couldn't find anything that resembles what is happening to Myrtle, our 89 F350 in my sig.

Recently I pulled the box off to install a flatbed, so since they were exposed and had never been replaced, I installed new fuel pumps in the tanks. Well no, the other reason is that the rear pump would cut out after running for about 60 miles, no matter how much fuel was in the tank.
Anyway, I replaced both front and rear pumps, the tanks were clean as whistles, but today on my way back from the junk yard the rear pump cuts out. Flip the switch and I'm on my merry way. The rear tank has gas in it.
When I get home, I flip the switch back the rear tank, and lo and behold, it starts, idles, and when I open the throttle, the engine revs, no sign of lacking gas... I would have driven it around but I had to get to work.
Before all this I replaced the fuel pump relay.
I would check for codes, but I can't for the life of me find the STI connector. I'll have to look some more, it's gotta be there right?

Thanks for reading, and looking forward to some sweet wisdom.

just did another search and this is what came up:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...m-problem.html
the only difference is that russ did not switch tanks on the fly...

when i get home tonight i'll try driving it around again in the rear tank and report. i'll rent a fuel pressure tester on the way home and see if i can take some readings.

You need to retrieve codes, there is a paperclip procedure you can try. You need to find out what controls or cuts the rear pump, btw, how did you come to that conclusion? are they electrical? that would make me suspect any of the wires to that pump is getting too hot, making it fail.

What brand of fuel pumps did you put in? That might be the problem. Cheap pumps don't last. Airtex etc.

There are supposed to be two connectors, one small one and one big one, to perform the self test, correct? I can only find the bigger one. I didn't come to any conclusions although my writing is misleading. What I meant to say is after driving around for about 60 miles on the rear tank, the truck will sputter and die. And come back to life after I flip the tank switch.

Airtex is the brand. But I had the same problem with the original motor craft pump in the rear tank too.
