I HAVE A 1978 BRONCO... ALL ORIGINAL 351M HAS BEEN REBUILT IN SOME TIME IN IT'S LIFE, RUNS AWSOME!! JUST GUTLESS, AND HORRIBLE GAS MILEAGE... NOT SURE TO KEEP OR SELL IT. ANYWAYS,.,. HAVE HEARD THAT THE CAM WAS RETARDED 6-8 DEGREES BEWEEN THE FACTORY CAM AND TIMING CHAIN SET. LOOKING TO UPGRADE THE CAMSHAFT AND TIMING CHAIN. WOULD IT MAKE ANY DIFFERNACE IN RUNNING COOLER? AND LOOKING FOR MORE LOW END GETTY UP AND GO. NOT LOOKING FOR HP. I KNOW A 400 IS THE WAY TO GO. BUT LOOKING FOR A CHEEP GET ME BY THING... IF I KEEP IT , IT WILL BE GETTING A DIESEL ENGINE!!! ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS GUYS? BYT THE WAY STILL HAS FACTORY MOTOR CRAFT 2BBL AND AND CAST IRON INTAKE...
I'm assuming your at work and not yelling at EVERYONE....anyway turn the cap locks off.
Your 351M will always be a gas guzzling pig...in fact all our trucks are. As for power you hear correct about a straight up timing set making it a little better. A cam change will prob result in worse gas mileage. The 351M to me is near the worst motor ford ever made. I hate to be negative but they just aren't good even with all the bolt on goodies.
I'm running a 400M. In terms of upgrades - as I understand it - timing set is first, next is cam, then 4bbl/dual exhaust then headers. Beyond that its rebuild with higher compression and 400 CI and next is better heads.
What is the condition of the 351? If its good and you want to run it for a while some of the upgrades above may make sense. Otherwise enjoy the truck as is and save up for your "ultimate" engine.
Mine runs pretty well as is and I'm still deciding what (if anything) to do with the engine.
To the OP after think some more you could probably buy a used 460 for the same amount you would spend on aftermarket upgrades. You would get a lot better running motor just won't get much better mi.
