Carpet install question (no template)

Getting to install new carpet in the truck. However, the PO removed the old stuff, so I have no template to work off of. My question is do I cut the carpet so that the seat "feet" mate directly to the cab floor, or do I just cut holes for the bolts and sandwich the carpet between the feet and floor. I guess I also have the same question about seat belt floor attachments. For the 4x Shifter, I have a chrome ring. I'm assuming I just cut the carpet to fit around the ring and it sits on top of the boot. Anyone with original set up that can tell me how these were done?

use a razor knife to cut slits to allow bolts and screws to go through carpet so that the threads of the hardware does not catch fibers from carpet. yes, the carpet is sandwiched between seats, belts, and ring

Pre-install the seat bolts before laying down the carpet and then feel around for them and then cut a small "X" on their heads. Then the holes will be exactly where they need to be.

If feeling especially detail oriented, melt the fibers around the hole with a soldering iron so they don't unravel.

Btw, avoid drilling through carpet.. the bit can catch a loom and very quickly wrap and pull itself out thereby ruining the carpet and all your hard work.

When installing carpet in vehicles I also like to start at the firewall and work my way back. You want to make sure it fits the tunnel right and the floor pans. I like when they let extra at the rear to cut off that is the easiest. However my older Mustang I had to trim it at the front to fit the tunnel correctly. If you run into that make sure you cut it square so it's not funky at the back.

Thanks again everyone. I like the idea of putting the bolts in, laying the carpet over and then cutting the X. Definitely get the no drill part.

The carpet is bound on the back half, so I think I will have to start there and roll it forward to get an idea of where to cut for the shifter. One I have it over the shifter, I can adjust to get the preformed areas into place prior to cutting for the bolts.

I bought the mass backed stuff from stockinteriors. It looks pretty nice. Of course once I got into it, I decide to fill some holes made by the PO, remove the seatbelt wires(never worked) clean up the seat rails, etc. These things always take longer than I think because if find so many other things to take care of in the process. So maybe install tomorrow.
