I don't think it's a Mercedes, those typically used an inline pump and the pushrod engines were a u-turn style rather than cross flow. Plus, Mercedes is proud of their stuff, throwing three pointed star on EVERYTHING.
It's not a Ford, it looks very similar to the Nissan SD33, but that is a u-turn as well. I haven't been able to find good pics of Hino or Mitsu engines of that era, but what I have found shows an inline pump. The pump is on the wrong side to be a Hercules.
So, pushrod engine, VE pump, and not a lot of things.
I'm going to venture a guess that it's Japanese though.
looks like time to do some serious cross referencing
take all part numbers you can find oil filter, alternator, ext
then get lists of all vehicles each part fits, and start crossing out the ones that arent on the list with all the other parts. you will probably be left with a 10 engine list but that will be easier the scanning the net for days not finding pics.
It's a Cummins 6AT. 3.4l, 120hp, generally pretty reliable. Not as common as the B series, but there are some people who have swapped them in. There's even a thread about it right here in the general diesel section.
What I think is the oil cooler is cracked on this engine and I need to fix it before I can use it next spring. Now that I have an idea of what it is, maybe I can find the part I need.
