I have an F250 LD with the tow package. I assume there is no electric brake controller included with the pre-wired 7 pin plug. Can anyone tell me the location and shape/color of the hookup that I have read is under the dash? Thanks!
The wiring at least on my 94 F250HD is in a wire bundle about 3/4 diameter wrapped in black tape just under the dash to the left of the ashtray and under the little cubby hole. It was very easy to find and seemed obvious that is what it what for. The bige bundle kind of U turns and goes up into the dash near the bubby hole, but the trailer wires were originally just kind of laying in there where it could be easily found.
The trailer wiring splits off into I think 4 wires and if I recall a small rectangular black connector. I had to cut my connector to install with the controller I had, so like I said "I think". I looked at the setup just now and everything is as described except I don' know for sure on the original connector.
Up until last year, Ford supplied the pigtail to connect your brake controller to the truck harness. Now you have to buy it. If you buy a Tekonsha Prodogy you can get a harness with plug on both ends, no splicing! I don't have one, but all the posts about them are positive.
I talked to Ford dealer today and he told me they have one in stock (connecter) for $6 and it has 5 wires. The lights all work on the trailer with the tow package wiring (7-pin female plug) so I only need to run the brake control box to battery (positive and negative terminals) and 2 wires to trailer (brakes and ground?) so I will have to see plug from dealer to figure it out. Thanks for the help!
I just seem to be a little slow on this one...here's the gig. I picked up the connector and it is labeled as follows...illumination feed, ground, trailer electric brake, stop lamp, feed wire from batt. I have a Reese Brakeman compact with 4 wires out the back as follows...red, blue, black, white. I know white goes to negative terminal and black to the positive terminal on the battery. I also know there is a 20 amp resetting breaker in line on the black wire. I just can't put it together where the wires from the connector go...please help. I'm losing hair by the minute!
Someone who owns a Reese control might know but if it was me I would call Reese or go on their website for a wiring diagram. You definitely don't want to get the wires crossed and put power to it as it can damage the brake controller. I have a prodigy so can't be of much help.

The wiring for all controllers should be the same. The red wire is the STOP LAMP circuit, the blue wire (which should be thicker) goes to the TRAILER ELECTRIC BRAKE. White is GROUND. Black is FEED FROM BATTERY. The ILLUMINATION wire is for some controllers which have an instrument panel light, just tape it up if you don't need it. The colors on my Ford Plug don't match the controller colors, but the functions on the labels match up to the wire colors on the brake controller.
Me again...I picked up the connector plug from Ford, wired accordingly, lights all work correctly but brakes do not work. When the key is turned off, the light on the electric brake control comes on when applying the brakes as it should and goes off when brake pedal is not depressed. When you turn the key to run position the light on the brake control is on constantly. The brakes are not working on the trailer either time. I had this controller wired up to my old truck and both truck and trailer brakes worked fine. I am confused as to why it won't work...any MORE help??? Thanks for your patience!
There may be a fuse missing in the fuse block that supplies the brake controller. On the Expedition it is #29, 30 amps. Sometimes Ford did not install the fuse, but shipped it with the vehicle, along with the wiring harness.
Thanks for the help Ron. I checked for the fuse before and it was ok...I also checked to see if there was power throughout the wiring and I have power all the way back to the plug. What I don't understand is if it worked fine on the other truck, why , if I have power to the plug, doesn't it operate the brakes? And why is the light on the brake control lit constantly when the key is in the run position and only light when the brake pedal is applied when the key is turned off?
Have you checked the wiring coming out of the pigtail without the controller connected? There should be constant feed from the black wire regardless of the position of your ignition. The red will only be hot when brakes are applied. Ignition switch position should not make a diffrence. It's possible that pigtail may be installed to an incorrect socket. Depending on year model, the socket should be gray in color with 5 pins.
My 1999 F-150 came with a flat 4 wire. I change it to a Round 7 wire by ordering Part # YL3Z-13A576-GB wiring assy from FORD. I had to order two relays to complete the wiring. One was a half relay the other was a whole relay that went into the fuse box under the hood. I used the brake control wiring assy that came with my 2000 Windstar that I was not using.
