Hello
The vehicle in question is a 98 Explorer with the 4.0L. All I have right now is the Haynes manual. I plan on getting the shop manual very soon. Is there a trick for replacing the O2 sensors. One individual said you need to remove the whole exhaust system to do this. The pics in the Haynes manual are useless. How do you disconnect the electrical connectors as they are very far up in the engine. If anyone who has done this could give me some pointers I would really appreciate that. Thanks in advance.
Tony L.
The wire connectors are about 12 inches from the O2 sensors. Some have a safety clip that needs to be pull out before disconnecting the sensors wires. I used an O2 sensor removing socket kit from o'reilly's that work great. You can borrow it, then return it.
I doubt you would have to remove part of the exhaust to get the O2 sensor out. Ford has done some stupid things, but I can't imagine they'd do something that stupid.
I've had to remove part of the exhaust on my Honda because the sensor was stuck in there really good (or bad). On my Ranger, the hardest part about removing the sensor was getting the connector apart. Access to the connector was ****-poor. It probably took me an hour of trying to access the dang connector from every possible angle so I could get it apart without damaging the wires. Once I got the connector apart, the sensor was off in 30 seconds.
Take a peek yourself and evaluate the situation. Also, check youtube for videos.
