Take a good look at the carrier bearing in the video. Is it just me or can anyone else see the rubber around the bearing itself moving in the housing? Mine did the same once (ive replaced mine 9 times due to axle wrap) and the rubber piece spun in the casing and eventually came all the way of the housing and seized up the bearing. Worth a check before you spend the money on the yoke....If so, it would create the "rat tail" as you put it because it allows play.

i saw the same thing, rob - something was definitely walking around on the rear of the carrier bearing (right side in the video).

as for the question of mixing and matching shaft sections, its always best to keep a shaft together in one piece. there's actually a sticker on the shaft from the factory that says the entire shaft must be replaced as a unit, or it must be rebalanced after any work performed to it.

of course, you may be OK mixing and matching, but you also may wind up right back where you are now.

I will check under the truck tomorrow, if I have any loose parts on the carrier bearing. I think the video was not that good and it is a very high vibration, making it appear to be bad.. But I heck. Thanks.

*** for the drive shaft, are all front zf5- speed shafts the same ?.. Diesel of course.. Or are there different length pending on the cab.. I know, there is at least one more shaft at the salvage yard, but it is from an ext cab.

Just went outside and checked my truck. There is a rubber lip all the way around, which is part of the rubber in the carrier. Everything is solid as I thought.. What you see in the video is the vibration of the shaft, making the rubber lip look like it is loose. I should have made a better video I guess

All zf-5 shafts should be the same length if theyre from the correct cab configuration.

I believe what people were referencing before about piecing a driveshaft together is that a driveshaft should be balanced as a single unit, so in our swaps when we changed the front piece of the driveshaft out it could have taken it out of balance.

need driveshaft

ok... I NEED A DRIVESHAFT..... I went to the local junk yard and the problem is, the way they pick up the trucks, they bend the rear and front driveshafts.. thats why mine is crooked.. its the thinner splined part, that is bend.

(wonder if i can get it somewhat straight with a jack ?)

does anybody have and extra front driveshaft? or know, where i can get one ?

you guys propably think im crazy, but here is what i did:
blocked up the rear end and turned the wheels, while holding a sharpie at little distance away from front driveshaft tail section.. Logically after several turns, i had the point where the end section was bend, i then turned the section down and put a jack underneath and lifted up.. then rotated the shaft again , using my sharpie.. after about 45 min i was doen.. the driveshaft is straight without any vibration

worked good... took it on a test drive and she does fine
