Did I kill my E4OD?
It finally happened. Caught it a huge traffic jam pulling a boat home from vacation. Ran for 1.5 hrs barely at idle speed in 80+ degree heat.
After traffic cleared (10 miles from home) it started smoking, and I immediately pulled over. Transmission fluid spewing out from the torque converter (bell housing) and drain plug grommet. It drained for quite some time. At least 3-4 qts. I had it towed home and let it sit for a day.
I added/started/checked/added/started/checked the tranny for about an hour, and finally got it close to full by adding 6 qts! It is still a bit low, but OK.
It seems to shift fine, and runs fine with no leaks. So, it is obvious this was the dreaded seal leak that 'self-corrects' after cooling back down up.
HOWEVER. I have one issue that worries me. Under slow acceleration, the tranny 'clunks' at about 1300-1500 RPM. It does NOT change gears -- just clunks once. If I get on it, and rev straight to 2000+ RPM's , it does not clunk. It runs great up to 65+ MPH.
This is similar to the rear-end clunk that I have had for 15 years with this thing, but this one is more noticeable, and certainly is in the transmission -- not the rear differential.
Any thoughts on this one?
Thanks,
Todd
