Just picked up an Excursion with the V10 and 4R100 (2001). Drove it in to work to day and while on the freeway cruising on cruise control about 60 it seemed to shift or atleast lock/unlock the trans on ever slight downhill you encounter on a city freeway. Just light humps in the road. Does this seem normal? First drive for me so I am not familiar with it and looking for some advice.
RPM's would be just shy of 2000 then I'd hit a small decline and would shift to 1600 or so then back up when it leveled out.
Check for codes. If nothing comes up with the codes you'll need a scan tool that can look at live data to see where the bad data is coming from. It could be vehicle speed, throttle position, or a whole list of other things.

Thanks Mark. I dont show any codes but Ill pull them today and check. Do you think the torque app will have enough to show that?
Monitored it on the drive home. Did the same thing, even with OD off. Fine at 65 mph, 55-60 its doing it. Appears to lock (rpm's down) to TC when I hit a slight downhill then unlock on the hills and flats (rpm's up). Doesnt feel that it shifts. .. no codes recorded.
My thoughts are that you should find a shop with a high end scan tool.
Any thing with out hooking up a scan tool, is just a W.A.G. If you plan on keeping the vehicle for a while you might look into A.E. It is a laptop based scan tool, it is invaluable to me. You might put where you are located, someone in the area might help you out...
My Wild A** Guess is since it is only unlocking when you hit bumps, or down hill is the brake switch is engaging, maybe the pedal has some play, when you touch the brakes when driving it unlocks the converter, even if you have your foot on the gas... or at least it does on both of my diesels with 4R100 transmissions. Mark would be the one to tell you if that is in fact the case, though I don't see any reason why they would want it to stay engaged when the brakes are active... this is where the scan tool is an asset, you can monitor the individual PIDS and see if the pcm is commanding it and if the brake is activating. good luck, and once you get it sorted you will love the X. It is the best vehicle we have ever purchased for the Fam.
OK- Its definately unlocking the TC once I crest the rise. Watched the TC Slip on torque and its clearly doing it in 3rd, 4th and whether its foot or cruise control on. Did it at 55, 60 and 65mph.
Heard back from a friend whose friend has a full Snap-On diag box... hes not in the country right now so im out of luck there.
AutoEnginuity looks very nice... I might have to look into that but just cant swing it now.
I love the Excursion, it was a great buy but at half what the rest are going for I knew I would be doing some work on it. I have already done a full service with hoses, belt, plugs, all the fluids and replaced the alternator. Now to jsut work out this bug........
An engine problem, a plugged fuel filter, a plugged air filter, a bad throttle position sensor, a bad map sensor, a bad temp sensor, a wiring problem, or an internal transmission problem. Those are just a few to get you started. If you want to narrow it down to what's really wrong you will need live data to see what's going on.
