Airbag light was flashing. Received recall letter. Dealer replaced a wiring harness. Dealer did not confirm functionality of airbag prior to leaving shop.
Light continues to flash. New diagnostics from dealer says error code 1885 - the control restraint module needs replacing for $600 in P&L. Does the code match the fix? Can a novice mechanic replace the module?
The restraint control module is the computer that controls all of the passive restraint system. While there is nothing especially difficult with replacing the module, doing so incorrectly can cause airbag deployment. In addition, the new module needs to be programmed, so even if you install it yourself, you will still need to take it to the dealer to have it programmed. It is located under the center console or middle seat, depending on how your vehicle is equipped.
Check the sensor that sits right in front of the radiator grill. These often crack and corrode. When mine went bad, all sorts gremlins with the airbags lights and seatbelts occurred.
