A/C Evaporator cleaning

Hey all,
I'm new here, and I was wondering what to do about a problem i've been having with the AC. So, for a while now, my 95 F150 hasn't been blowing a lot of air, and up until recent it didn't matter, because the AC hadn't been working either. Now, I'm working on replacing the bad compressor, and I'm looking to get some good air flow.. I started by pulling off the blower motor, and I noticed that the evaporator was covered in hardened dirt on the evaporator.. My question is if anyone knows how to clean it without taking the lines off of it? Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Vince

The outer casing comes off the evap. There are some small bolts you must remove around the case and one bolt inside the cab. Pull it off and you should be able to pull up the evap without disconnecting anything. You can pretty much pull the a/c system out of these trucks without discharging the system.

Hi Vince, and welcome to FTE, since you're getting A/C compressor you should replace the condenser and the dryer/accumulator, and since you're replacing those and the evaporator sounds like it's in quite a rough shape I would replace it too, believe me, I recently did all this because I installed a new compressor, and you don't want that shiny new one to fail because there are any contaminants in the system. I even replaced every single o-ring in the system with HNBR o-rings and had the system serviced at a shop (proper vacuum and oil/gas charge).

Like Encho said at a minimum you need to replace the orifice tube and accumulator/drier. And since you are in there spend a few extra dollars and replace all of the o-rings. And since you are doing that just pull the evap out and clean the outside, soak in a soapy solution and hose it off till its clean, then flush the refrigerant side, the clean the condenser while you are cleaning stuff, some de-greaser and a hose for the outside and flush the inside. Then you can put it all back together and pull vacuum for 4 or 6 hours. Then check to see the vacuum holds. Then you can charge the system
