I am about to replace a locked up compressor on a 1999 4.0L Explorer. Is it imperative to replace the condenser or can it be flushed? Ideas... Thanks
If the compressor grenaded internally, replacing the condensor is a good idea. You can try backflushing it, however, your results will not be certain. The concensor will act as a filter for the larger pieces of debris.
In any event, the accumulator and oriface tube MUST be replaced and the rest of the lines flushed to remove any debris that might, in the future, compromise the integrity of the system.

Acaptain, projectSHO is right on with his advice. If the compressor is locked up it probably did grenade and that means you really need to be thorough in cleaning the system before reassembly. Not replacing the accumulator is a crap shoot. I have done several ac jobs (15-20) and on only one was there something that caused me to redo one of them because of somehing I missed in the system, fortunately it got caught up in the orfice tube and did not trash the entire system but I still had to break everything open again remove the piece of trash and redo it. when you break the system open if you find trash in the hoses it might be worth it to replace it.
Thanks guys.. I completed the repair job 2 weeks ago and everything is operating cool and quiet. I did not find any evidence of large debris in any hose or the orifice tube. The condenser was flushed twice from both directions. I really hated to replace the condenser, on this budget job...
Glad to hear you got it fixed without spending too many $$$$$'s. A/C repair jobs can get very very expensive. Sounds like you did a good job on your flush of the system. What did you use to flush the system? I have used brake cleaner with good results.
