Looking at maybe buying a 96 F250 with 59k mile. Only catch is its a 7.5V8 automatic. I know the fuel milage is going to be bad. Just want to know how bad.
If you're worried at all about gas mileage, find a little four banger Ranger pickup. That 460 is meant to do one job; carry or pull a big load easily. To do that, it must consume gas like it's going out of style.
Mine gets an average of 10-11. More on the highway, less in town. I had the same rig with the 5.8 and didn't get more than 1 or 2 mpg better and way less power. Didn't say if it was 2wd or 4, that will make a difference too.
Thanks for the feedback guys. Around 10 MPG is actually alittle better than I expected to hear. This will be for hauling and towing so maybe the big ol gas motor wouldnt be so bad. Diesels are soooo spendy!!!
Ditto on the 10-12, its a horse, let it breathe. Make sure you cut out the air horn baffle, advance the timing a little dependent upon your elevation, and if you are into some minor mods, the big horse likes an opened up exhaust and intake. My big boy gets 10, but I had another 97 460 with 35's, and it got 15's on the hwy after the above mods and a Jet chip.
Wow, 10-12 with a 460 and tons of power. I'm getting an average of 13-14 around town in my single cab/short bed 2WD 5.0. Something is wrong with that picture. I probably need a tune-up.

That is about right 13-15 around town for my F150 4x4 5.0. One the road it gets 17-20.
The 460 gets 12 at best around town or on the highway. My 460 only got around 8-9 around town in stop & go traffic. My 99 Dodge 4x4 V-10 will get 12-14 on the road & about 8-10 in town.
This is a "Plain Jane" XL 4x4 with 59k actual miles. It has a Western fiberglass plow on it. Power steeriing, brakes automatic trans but thats about it, not even A/C.
Does NOT have overdrive. I'm guessing that is not going to help fuel economy.
Drives like a new truck, tight and solid. The big 7.5 is smooth and runs like a dream but I'm going to guess about 8 mpg. But I can buy it for $2K.

What do you mean it DOESN'T have OVERDRIVE, it a 1996? What does it have?
I dont know much about these trucks. I thought all trucks this vintage would have AOD transmissions. We have a similar truck at work and on the end of the selector lever there is a button labeled "Overdrive" I assume to turn it on and off. There is not one on this truck. The lever position indicator on the instrument panel has "D,2,1"
Looking under it the trans pan looks like the old C6 pan with the center being deeper.
Taking off from a stop there are only 2 shifts 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. Waited for the OD up to about 55 but didnt get it.
Is it possible it is just a 3 speed or does it have a problem?
