Identify this steering piece

Can anyone identify this piece here? I don't know anything about steering but my steering wheel has a lot of play in it and it makes it really hard to drive. Getting above 50 is dangerous. I started looking around and saw this piece. It looks like it's some kind of bushing that is almost mush but doesn't look like it originally was. When I turn the steering wheel the part above the bushing has a big of distance to travel before it makes contact with the piece on bottom, it looks like a stud going into a U on either side and it doesn't actually turn the wheels until that U is pushed against the stud. Could this be causing my steering problem? Is it hard to change? I'm going to take it to the shop tomorrow because I don't feel comfortable working on the steering myself and just hoping to find out what I'm in for.

Some people call it a Steering Coupler. In the business, the slang term for it is Rag Joint. Easy to change.

Thanks for the response Jeff. So would I be correct in my assumption that it should be so degraded and that might be causing my steering issues?

It's definetly possible. Have someone move the steering wheel for you. Watch above it and below it. You shouldn't see any play. What happens is the rubber donut deteriorates and no longer keeps the upper and lower shafts in unison.

That's what I did and that's exactly what it looks like; the two pieces are not in unison. There is a bit of play in either direction. Hopefully that takes care of it because I'd like to be able to drive this thing on the freeway!

While you're at it check all steering linkage, king pins, steering box for slop also. Might-as-well fix what all is worn out at once.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Unfortunately steering is one thing I don't know well at all. This truck is going to be my daily driver starting in about a week so I need to get it into the shop tomorrow morning. Hopefully there isn't TOO much wrong there that I end up spending a grand on the steering alone. I got the truck for a steal, $2000, but if I have to put $1500 into it I'll be a little irritated to be sure!

Oh, I understand but steering and brakes you don't want to mess around with. Better to stay on this Forum than doing a Dirt Nap.

Oh I couldn't agree more. That's why I'm taking it to a shop instead of trying to use it as a learning experience. I'm just hoping that is the only problem with the steering and not something more serious. The brakes, suspension, transmission, and motor are all in awesome shape so I really can't complain too much.
