Brake problems

I have a problem with my rear brakes working then not working! When I bled them I couldn't get air or fluid at one time then I could. So they work then they don't. All I can think is that the brake propotion valve is bad. I've never had one go bad but I guess they could. Does any one have any ideas? It is a 82 ford f100 stepside . It has the three hundred six three speed w o/d. Any ideas will help. I hate to get a proportion valve and that not be it. Thanks

What happens when they don't work? The pedal gets hard and will not travel anymore or the pedal goes to the floor?

Well the pedal gets spongy the front brakes work if u let off the pedal and hit them again they work in the back but the next time they don't work. It's got me baffled.
