I jsut had my Rear brakes done at the local shop because I was too lazy and cold to do them my self. Anyway, the shop replaced both back brake calipers as the both had a stuck piston. This I knew. The brake smell gave it away . After picking up the truck the brake pedal was spongy and would not hold pressure. Ok, So I had them replace the brake master cylinder. Pedal still very spongy and almost goes to the floor ( long travel now). Seems the same before master was changed. Anybody else have this problem. They said the flushed out all of the Brake fluid and put new in.
It is a 2000 SD with a V -10 Love Ya OPEC!!
Any Ideas as to why the long pedal travel now?? And spongy pedal??
Long travel and spongy pedal is caused by air in the system. I assume you can pump up the pedal?
Spongy pedal can also be caused by bad flexible lines.
Pedal going to the floor, especially when you are stopped with your foot on the brake, is caused by a component loosing pressure. The culprit is usually the MC, but can also be a slave, bad brake line or bad flexible line. Look for brake fluid loss.
If they did brake work and you're pedal goes to the floor after they did brake work, then why are you trying to fix the problem? I don't know who did your brakes, but I seriously urge you to find another mechanic. Any mechanic that would let you drive away a vehicle with brakes like this should be avoided at all costs.
if they drained the system you have to have a scanner to bleed out the abs system. my snap on solus scanner can do it. i would ask the shop if there scanner is able to do this, otherwise you will have to go to ford.
I don't think you need anything to bleed the system. I may be wrong but my cd didn't say anything. Like was said above you have air somewhere..Maybe a look at the rear calipers is in order also. Why and how could they let it go out the door.????
Found this:
Four Wheel Anti-Lock Brake System (4WABS) Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU)
Note:
This procedure only needs to be performed if the 4-wheel anti-lock brake (4WABS) hydraulic control unit (HCU) has been replaced or if the HCU lines have been opened.
It does have some pedal in it that stops the truck fine now. But it does not have the pedal it did before. The brake pedal now goes down past the level of the gas pedal. The only thing I can think of is that there is still air trapped in the rear calipers.
I do not plan on fixing this myself, but needed other ideas prior to going back to complain.
Thanks for the other ideas.
