As you predicted tom, the EVP sensor did not help. I think I agree with you that the whole EGR thing is a red herring. I plan now to go back, study the vacuum and perhaps look for a bad ground. Does anyone have a pinout for the computer of an '86? The fuel injection page has them for V8 trucks, but I'm sure each model is different. Would the EGR codes suggest the first place to look for a bad ground would be in emissions? Thanks everyone for the input.
An update on troubleshooting: examined and replaced some suspect vacuum lines with no effect. Checked the vacuum, 15 inches of mercury with a flutter in the needle. Tonight I disconnected the Hego sensor and went for a drive, no evidence of the problems with surging/dying. Got a new sensor on order. I'll let you know if this turns out to be the solution.
Just wanted to wrap this thread up. The surging/dying contined and I finally gave up and moved on to another project, that of replacing the cylinder head with a rebuilt one. In the process of disassembling the upper part of the engine, I discovered the probable cause of my troubles. Ready? Number 2 spark plug was disconected. That explains both the surging issue and the electrical gremlins, since I'm sure it was grounding itself intermittently and the computer was vainly seeking a fuel trim with all that unburned fuel coming to the O2 sensor. As a result, I'll humbly present the back of my head for a dope slap .
On a cheerier note, the new cylinder head has made a noticable increase in power in the lower gears. Can't wait to try it on the freeway. Thanks tomw, pawpaw and everyone else for your suggestons and help.
OK, good find & feedback. Your finding the loose plug wire kinda reminds me what Dan, an old engineer I worked with had framed & hung on the wall in his office, it said "Look for something simple....Stupid"!!!! I tried to remind myself of those words & go back & review the simple things every time I'd become stumped on trouble shooting a problem & found they were right more times than I can count!!!!
Good to hear you seem to have things squared away & its running better.
