Tires options 73 Highboy

(sorry I couldn't get the correct search phrase to pull this up, I'm sure it's been discussed and beaten to dead horse status)

I've got a stock (not lifted) 1973 F250 and was wondering how large I could realistically go with tires without rubbing etc. It's currently riding on 16" rims but that doesn't matter - willing to change.

As a side thought, anyone have an idea of fuel suffering due to increased tire size?

Thanks in advance

Generally speaking 35-38" even the most beat down highboy will clear 35's

If your springs are "fresh" 38's would be about the max...

I would stick with around 35"...I know you can go bigger, as stated above, but I personally don't enjoy stuffing tires on trucks.

As far as fuel, it will mess with your odometer, so it will effect you ability to judge your MPG. 38's will definitely kill your mpg. I ran 35's on my 2003 F150 and it only knocked down a couple MPG. I think if I would have put in the proper gears in it, it wouldn't have changed. Wish I was more help.

You're in a nearly 3 ton truck powered by a FE i presume? so your mileage isn't the greatest to begin with, bumping up the tire size to 35's isn't going to affect it much, if at all.

35's work better with the highboys stock 4.10 gearing anyway, the stock sized 32's really wind the motor up at hi-way speeds, the 35's will lower your rpm's by about 300.

Roger that gentlemen, thank you. There's a guy at work that has some big ole 37" x12.5 military tires but I think that might be pushing it. As much as I love those wranglers they're pretty damn big. Tempting though if priced right haha

Those are on my truck. Not driving it right now until we finish restoring it, but will stick with them for now.

I ran those old 37" military take offs on my 76 with 100% factory suspension, minimal trimming and zero rubbing. I should have some pics in my gallery.

They're cheap, i'll grant you that, but they ride like crap...stiff with very little sidewall flex, in cold temps they're basically a brick... just something to keep in mind.
