I've been running 285s for the last few tire changes. I didn't notice any power or mileage loss to speak of. I like the look also. I recently bought 16x8.5 rims to get more even wear out of them over the stock rims. I can now run max tire pressure without wearing out the middle of the tread.
Mine actually improved. However, the main reason was because I went from worn out BFG A/Ts to bridgestone dueler A/T revos. The revos are better in all conditions except mud IMO. And they get in the .5 - 1 mpg better, atleast thats what I had noticed. Also my speedo is more correct with the 285s. ( checked with gps). I ran two sets of revos, then one more set of bfgs, and i wont run another set of bfg a/ts on the ford again. The only situation i noticed they were better was in mud, and thats it. This try, i just ordered some 285/70 - 17s to go on my new bling wheels, and i got them in the new goodyear silent armours. Seems people think highly of them, and ive seen peoples reviews with ex's and SD trucks in the 40-60k mile range. The revos and bfgs last 25-35k with my driving.
The conversion from metric sizing, to the real number system (standard haha) is dependant on each tire manufacturer. In the dueler A/T revos 265/75 - 16s are 31.8 diameter, 8.1 inches wide tread. 285/75 16s are 33 inches in diameter, and 8.7 inches wide tread. So infact 1.2 inches "taller". The resulting change in mileage is 285s take 631 revs per mile and 265s take 655 revs per mile. Actual sizing should be checked from toyos website if you want to know for sure how much difference there is. Also, the rating ive given, is based on NEW tires, not worn ones, Warn 265 (down to 2/16 of tread would result in just about a 31" tall tire.
I will be going to the 285s in the fall and i am leaning toward toyo ATs. Are the 285s any taller than the 265s?
I think bye an inch or two, doesn't sound like much but it does look better. Mine has no leaf pack and it just clears my mud guards in the front by an inch. Slow typer, Speedy got yaa.....
And lastly, there are pictures of my truck with 285s in the link below my sig. The 285 pics are the older ones, farther back. The pics at the top are of the truck with 315s.
