I'm getting my E4OD rebuilt with all the upgrades & a shift kit. The rebuilder suggested that I get a Billet single disc converter.
My 434 'M' block motor makes 533 ft-lbs @ 4700 RPM. I don't want a low stall speed like a diesel needs. I'm thinking about a 2000 RPM stall, so the motor gets into the power band without lugging.
Most E4OD aftermarket converters are made for towing, and have low stall speeds. Do I have to go to a TCI or Hughes converter to get a decent stall speed?
Try Dacco for your converter, I believe there's a location in Delaware. They can build whatever you need, and much cheaper. You could use a converter from a small block as they have a higher stall 1800 I believe.
The transmission rebuilder got a custom conveter for me. It came from Iowa, but I don't know who made it. It uses an Allison Hub. It has a 2000 stall, and a billet cover. It wasn't cheap.
I have a multi-disk lock up with a 2800 stall speed and it has excellent street manners. I purchased it from Circle D and they specialize in building converters for E4OD and 4R100 transmissions.
The trans rebuilder got me a custom Billet converter with a 2000 stall. I tried to install the transmission, and the trans will not go all the way to the block. I removed the new converter and compared it to the old converter, and it's longer from the flexplate to the transmission. The company that made it is Precision of New Hampshire. They make a lot of converters. Mine was a custom build with an Allison hub. It appears that someone made a mistake.
Are there any versions of E4OD transmissions that use a longer hub?
What are you planning to use the truck for? From what I understand torque converter upgrades are always nice for different reasons. Is this for fun or towing use ?

The truck is a '53 F100 Street Rod. I use it for shows & parades, and once in a while to make tire smoke. I needed an OD trans for MPG, and to keep the RPMs down at 70 MPH on the highway. I don't even have a tow hitch, so I can't tow.
My old trans was a good running C6 with a TCI high stall converter. I needed a converter with a 2000 stall to keep the motor in the power band. A low stall converter will make the motor lug.
