One of my trucks has a 9" rear in it. The gear ratio on the tag says 3.10. I want to swap in lower gears. Something like 3.89. I've read that I only need a ring and pinion cuz there is no carrier or something? Its a one size fits all sorta deal?
Yeah, with the Ford 9" you can swap in a 3.89 ring and pinion in place of the 3.10's.
While you're there, you might as well rebuild it with new bearings and seals.
One note, get more than one crush sleeve. Real easy to go too far when tightening the pinion nut. Once you've gone too far, you can't back up, you've gotta throw away the sleeve and start with a new one. Ask me how I know .

Thanks Mike! Any sugestions on where to get a rebuild kit? Idk if one is better or cheaper then another.
Here's one from Bronco Graveyard. Ford 9" Master Overhaul Kit,TIMKEN BEARINGS!
Before you order, make sure whether you have 28 or 31 spline axles and which type of axle bearing, roller or ball bearing.
If the tag is still on the diff, that can be decoded and give you all the info you need.
