On my around the farm truck, an '88 F250 351W 4x4, the stock manifolds have started leaking through the gaskets, which is causing the engine to run rich. My brother has a set of shorty Hedman Headers for a 79-85 Mustang 302. Will these bolt up, or will I have to drill new holes? I've got a machine shop, with a drill press and welder. I know I'll need gaskets, I should buy the 351 gaskets right?
Mustang headers will bolt to the heads but they won't bolt to the truck Y-pipe and don't have the fitting for the EGR tube.
P.S. Exhaust manifolds aren't installed with gaskets so your truck should not have any, if they're leaking they're more than likely cracked or you have a leaking in the air injection tube behind the motor.
Thanks, I didn't know that about the stock manifolds. So I should just buy headers. I was looking at Hedman's in the bronco graveyard catalog. Anybody know if they come with the EGR fitting?
i would just block off the egr port at the intake (leaving the egr in-tact and in place) and not bother sweating the egr provision on the header. I've tested just about every header that are out there for these trucks, and i would only buy pacesetter for fitment and quality.
I can smell it in the exhaust, it's strong enough to burn my nose hairs out, and this is with a new OEM cat put on after the rest of the exhaust was replaced. The exhaust leaks and trips the O2 sensor right? Which causes it to run rich. I think the PO tried taking the manifolds off, but stopped after finding a seized bolt, which I also found, as they were just snugged up. But I found a definite crack. Thanks for the advice about Pacesetters, maybe I can find some used as I'm headed to the Carlisle truck show tomorrow.
If you're going to run shorty headers, buy the Summit Racing brand shorty headers for your motor. They send you Pacesetters that are of very good quality. I'm running a set on my truck and am very happy with them. Make sure to get a good set of metal core gaskets for them.
