Just curious is there a clamp of sorts holding the hose to the bottom of the pump? If so it's kinda hard to tell, would a power wash before starting the work be good to do? Also last time I power blasted the engine it did a surging type stuffer for a short time, is that because water got into the engine some how?
Yes there's a clamp. The factory clamp is a spring style, but at this point it may have been replaced with a regular hose clamp.
I'd wait until the job is done to wash the engine bay, as mentioned before it's going to get messy no matter what. If you get the wires or cap, or the distributor wet, it'll misfire. Cover the distributor with a plastic bag, and try to keep water off the wires.
Something I've found very useful when doing a job like this is to empty the ps pump reservoir before taking the bottom hose off. I use a cheap turkey baster from the dollar store, but any suction type device will work.
