how do i go back to normal power steering fluid? all ive had is problems with type F all it does is leak and the pump wines all the time, even after a new pump thanks
Try undoing low pressure hose and letting as much as possible drain out, refill with ps fluid start vehicle and cycle the sterring wheel back and forth and repeat. ATF fluid is bad on seals in the system letting them leak and drawing air into the system, the reason for sqealing most of the time is airrated fluid or low levels, no garantee ps fluid is going to help what the atf has caused. Good luck.
Agreed. ATF won't even work on newer vehicles. I put a brand new pump in a car and filled it with ATF and it didn't have ANY power steering after the work was done. I drained and filled it with power steering fluid and it worked like a new one. Go figure.
Take the return line off the back of the pump, let it drain into a bucket. Then jack the car up and cycle the wheels back and forth. This will purge the rest of the fluid from the gear box. Re-attach the hose and fill with P/S fluid. Then keep it jacked up and with the ENGINE OFF, cycle the wheels back and forth about 20 times. Then top off the fluid and cycle them again another 20-30 times. Top off the fluid one last time and start the truck. You should be good to go if all the parts are in good shape. (pump and gear box)
ok thanks guys i think i got most out im exchanging the pump wednesday for a new one they have one on hold for me. i hope the gear box is still good after the damn atf i just hope it works better no leaking and what not lol
Mine was leaking pretty bad out the output shaft seal in the gear box. I used Lucas power steering stop leak. It works great, It hasn't leaked a drop since and the power steering works like new. I don't normally endorse "miracle fix it" products, but Lucas stuff does what it says it does.

It'll work until the additive breaks down and no longer swells the seals, at which point, you'll have a bigger problem than what you started with. Not saying it'll be 5 miles after using the stuff or 5 years after using that stuff, cuz I've used similar products too...but it's just a matter of time until it doesn't work anymore and you have a bigger mess.
Eh, the way I figure it, if it lasts until summer, great. At least I won't be freezing my butt off rebuilding the gear box. As far as a bigger mess, what mess? There's only a hand full of seals and two hoses it can affect. It was already dumping fluid on the ground. I'm ahead of the game if you ask me. I've already seen this stuff last for years and years. Everyday closer to summer it lasts, the better it is. Maybe in August if it's still hanging on, I'll pull it apart and throw new seals and bushings in it, but for now, I'm not laying on the snow-covered ground with numb fingers.
It works just fine, but the fact of the matter is, ATF breaks the rubber seals down MUCH faster than power steering fluid. Also, I don't know the difference, but after about 1997, or so, they don't recommend ATF anymore. I've done a bunch of these over the years. On the newer stuff, ATF just doesn't work.
