Question atf for ps fluid??

Anyone heard of that? I was told my new pump was reccomended to use a dexcron ps fluid which is tranny fluid? Took it to a shop as i have no puller. Had a gallon of ps fluid to fill it and new steering box. Whe i picked it up they had filled it with atf. It was whining a good bit. They said it would go away in a day or two. Well i was outside working the wheel trying to finish bleeding the air and it boiled over and fried the pump.

So all you know everythings and gurus and smarter than anyone else people please talk to me about this. Normal? Never heard of? Why it boiled over? Im lost right now.

I use ATF in my ps systems when I don't have ps fluid around. Never had a problem with it before.

I had never heard of it before. I was afraid that it was too thin or didnt transfer heat well enough as the new pump fried in about 25 miles.

When our PS pumps get low we just use which ever of them is first to get grabbed, and weve done that for about 5 trucks now with no problems. could the hoses have been put on wrong? that happened on my grandpas comet but we stopped it just barely early enough.

Anythings possible but my guess is no. The nuts on the box look to be 2 different sizes. Didnt pay enough attention to the pump nuts.

Is there anything wrong with mixing atf & psf? I see you use either but is that either to top off or either to fill entire system.

They usually boil over because of air in the system. I'd fill the system again and drive it a couple of days to see if it bleeds out.

Are you sure on that dextron ps fluid ?Most Fords before 1990 all used type F trans fluid I use it in my 95 F250. If your pump was whining a lot it probably still had air in it wasn't bled right.Bleed pump first with wheels off the ground engine off crank all the way rt hold for 15 seconds then turn all the way left hold 15 seconds you will puke some fluid do this 6 times or so making sure you keep fliud level up then start your engine and repeat the same thing till you see no more foaming or bubbling .

ATF was recommended in some of the older Fords. I ran it in my 85 and 83 for about 9 years after I blew a line in one and fixed both trucks. Actually seemed to work better for me.

Ford specs beginning at least in the 1960s were to use Type F ATF in the power steering, don't remember exactly when they moved away from that.
Type F : ESW-M2C33-F : Part # C1AZ-19582-C or D or Equivalent
Look in your Owner's Manual, purchase one from ebay if you don't have one.

It's all just hydraulic fluid but with various additives used as friction modifiers; you also should use what is compatible with your rubber seals. Some additives can cause them to swell up, or turn hard, or otherwise become non-functional.

Have been useing ATF for over 21 years
Like stated earlier ford called for in owners Manuel.
Some times it's a bear to get all the air out and that sounds like the problem.

A trick I use to get the air was out - I have an old pwr steering reservoir cap that I dilled a hole and stuck in a vacuum nipple. Then I would use my Mighty-Vac pump to pull a vacuum on the reservoir while the engine was running while turning steering wheel lock to lock a couple of times. it works great and it will get the air out fast.

My pump is shot. Ill snap a coue pics of the lines for yall to double check placement but it wont assist at all since the boil over. Manual steering in this thing right now is a bi!$h. Had to go help a friend change his radiator, water pump on an accord this morning so mine had to wait.

Ok. In this pic the rubber line in the top of the pic is bolted in the side of the pump (pressure side i guess) it loops to the front bolt hole on the box. The rear bolt hole loops around and around with metal line (for cooling i assume) and back into the plain clamp on fitting on the back bottom of the pump. I believe this is correct routing.
