A title (in most states) is the only legally recognized authorization to sell a vehicle.....no title....run, do not walk away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No title means offer half whatever scrap iron is worth in your area & us save every useable part off it or spend the cash & file for lost/abandon title * maybe get lucky.
In my state "no title " = part's and scrap metal only if the sheriff doesn't show up . Most scrap metal buyers want proof of ownership too and the sheriff has his eye on them when complete vehicals are brought in .
Reissued titles are easy enough to get. I think it was $45 for my last one, tell the seller you'll pay for it included in the price of the truck if he needs the motivation to get one. You'll never be able to get it registered at the DMV without one.
Here in nv you can just send a certified letter to the last known address and within thirty days when it comes back unopened you take to the dmv and you're declared the new owner.
I thought I'd drag this back up in regards to getting a new title.
My truck was originally confiscated by the sherrif as part of restitution to a victim. Said victim sold me the truck. Paperwork included was the original bill of sale from the sheriff and automotive power of attorney. DMV balked so I went back to the victim's lawyer who had actually completed the transaction with me. He got a court order and furthermore had it certified stating that they had to recognize her ownership and transfer title to me.....
The lawyer came with me today to the DMV. The DMV actually decided to still not issue me a title, and face contempt charges instead. So now I have a really pissed off lawyer, who among other things is now able to have the DMV held in contempt of court... and no title (yet).
