Excursion Spring replacement

Hello

I just replaced the upper and lower ball joints on my 2000 4X4 Excursion with the 7.3 PSD when I noticed that the leaf springs in the front were badly worn out. Specifically, the drivers side spring is resting on the stopper and the passenger side is about half an inch from doing so.

I have read over a dozen threads and have learned a ton. I have a question as to whether to pick the X code front springs or the V code springs. I read one post which stated that the PSD Excursions most likely had V code springs already. I looked at the door sticker and there is nothing listed under the section that reads "axle."

My vehicle is primarily a baby hauler that is driven mostly by my wife. I am not concerned about the lift difference between the v and x. I would like the vehicle to be level and I am planning on replacing the rear springs too.

I know it is subjective, and from the threads I have read it seems that more people are using V code over X. My issue is I am stuck and do not know whether I should order the V's or the X code for the front. Could any of you help the decision?

Thank you to all of the very informative and how to posts on the springs BTW.

No Ex ever came with a V code spring. Can you please provide a link to that post?

Since the amount of lift isn't a concern, please tell us what end result you want from the spring swap, and any other mods you might have planned for it.

Post #8 is what I am referring to.

In the end I would like a comfortable ride and I would like some lift to improve its looks and would like it to be level. From what I have read the amount of lift from either the V or X code springs would be fine with me. I am replacing the shocks as well and want to make sure that I get the correct shock with the right amount of travel since different springs add different lift heights.

I very rarely tow anything.

I don't believe there are any other suspension mods that I am looking at.

Thanks for your time.

Either way though, No Excursion came from the factory with V codes.

With V codes and a corresponding suspension modification to the rear end, you can get by with stock wheels. But if you go with X codes, you'll wanna go with a bigger wheel otherwise it will look funny, in my opinion.

Does spending money on wheels being added to the mix change anything?

Thank you for the reply. I am glad you asked about the wheels. I have been debating on getting the ford 2010 (i think) 20" factory chrome wheels. At a minimum I was thinking of 35" tires until I could get the larger wheels (if I get spousal approval).

I appreciate the help. I mostly want some lift, level vehicle, and no complaints from my wife regarding the stiff ride (although anything now will be an improvement as the springs are shot). I guess I have talked myself into V codes!

With 35's, you've talked yourself into X codes.

Depending on the tire, you could probably run 33's with V codes and have minimal rubbing, but if you want 35's, you'll be wanting X codes. Even then you'll probably rub.

If you go with the OEM 20" rims you will need to also buy and run 2" hubcentric spacers as the back spacing changed on Ford trucks in '05 when the SD trucks got the coil spring front suspension on 4X4's.

The spacers have another set of studs built in so you shouldn't have to.
