My 2001 F250 7.3 cut off in the middle of the interstate in bumper to bumper traffic yesterday (and I had to have it towed home). Thought it was the CPS or fuel filter, but replaced the CPS and the fuel filter looked okay (although I didn't have one so I haven't replaced it yet). It was running rough before it cut off and it will start occasionally and run really rough before cutting off again. Rarely at after sitting for a while it will idle okay but run rough as soon as you touch the accelerator. No check engine light on. It's like it isn't getting any fuel, but other than that all the symptoms are similar to a CPS problem. Not sure if I have a bad CPS (even though it's new and replaced after this started) or if it's something else. It did to run slightly better after I replaced the CPS, but could be a coincidence and still running very poorly and unable to drive. One thing I did not do was disconnect the battery for 30 minutes (it was only disconnected for 5 minutes tops). Any ideas or help?
I was thinking about replacing the fuel filter (even though it only has 5,000 miles on it and looks okay). Also, the oil and filter was changed about 500 miles ago. And I did notice the transmission cooler was leaking, but its a slow leak and there is still plenty of fluid in the trans. And the fuel guage is working and shows 1/4 of a tank. Batteries were tested and are strong as well. And we even took the air filter off to make sure it had plenty of air once we tried everything else. Don't know where to start on this thing fuel-wise. Have no way of checking fuel pressure ect.
Any help or things to check would be greatly appreciated.
I'd check your HPOP pressure. Sometimes a bad HPOP will even throw a CPS code, my truck HPOP was getting weak, changed the CPS sensor and it ran for a while and killed out again. If it cranks longer than normal id definitely lean towards HPOP
put some more fuel in it and see how it does. your pick up foot could have feel off in the tank. its a common problem in these trucks.
do a search for "hutch/harpoon" mod and you'll see what i'm talking about.
I think I'm going to replace the fuel filter and add some diesel fuel to the tank when I get home from work and see what that does. If that doesn't work I'll look into the HPOP (a friend mentioned that to me as well). I have about 185,000 miles and it's about 12/13 years old, but I heard the HPOP's normally go to about 300,000 miles. Just hoping it's not injectors (those were replaced before I bought the truck about 25,000 miles ago), injector pump, or module.
I replaced the fuel filter and found the pump was not filling the filter bowl. Looks like its fuse 19, but I can't figure out what relay? Relay 30 maybe? Otherwise I guess it's the pump itself.

not so fast, can you hear the pump running at all ? are you getting any fuel coming out up at the filter bowl ? if so what you may want to try now is... remove the fuel line from the back of the fuel pump, "take the cap off of the fuel tank when you do this" blow compressed air back through the line towards the tank in an attempt to clear any blockage you may have.
a clogged pick up screen can shut down the flow of fuel up to the filter. keep us posted..
Thanks everyone for all the help. It ended up being the fuel pump. It was difficult to find a decent one on a Sunday, but I ended up with an all metal one from O'Riellys (it was better than the alternative, AirTex). Running great now.
Unrelated question though, I currently have a Mac cold air intake and I don't trust the filter on it. In a box I have a Motorcraft AIS severe duty kit that came with the truck, but it looks like it's for a 6.0 and not a 7.3. Will this work on my truck or should I just go back to the stock air box? And/or any other suggestions?
Also, going back to CPS, mine had a black one and it runs great with it. Tried a grey motorcraft one and it ran like crap. Heard there is a new dark blue one or I could get a black one online. Any suggestions? Want to buy a backup to already have one for the future.

glad to hear you got er going again.
motorcraft made an ais for the 7.3, you may want to google it and see if it looks like yours. if it does, run it.. you already got it.
i believe the dark blue ones come from IH dealer, some one will correct me if i'm wrong. alot of us just buy them from clay at riffraff or bob at diesel orings. i dont think you will have much luck finding the original black ones, those that are lucky enough to have them, are holdin on to them.
And I checked online and the AIS I was given looks like the one for a 6.0. Part number 3C3U-9601-BC. I'm guessing this won't work on a 7.3.
i dont know if there is a way to make it work in their or not with out having it in my hands while being under the hood. maybe some one else can chime in on that.
you could always try to sell it in the 6.0L forum parts section or on C L , i think they cost about 250 new.
if your stock air box is not sealing up tight like alot of them do. the 6637 filter kit works real well that clay has, thats what i'm running. you will hear a little more turbo whistle with the 6637
