Classic symptom of a failed IAC (Idle Air Control) Valve. Tap on it with a screwdriver handle and see if it'll unstick. Should run normal then, but it ain't a permanent fix.
To fix it right, you'll have to take the valve off and clean it, or replace it with a new one.

Uh, alright, if you trust that mechanic then have at it, but I'd think if you had a fueling problem your engine would NOT stay running by giving it gas manually. I've seen this happen before, if you are being 100% accurate with your symptoms then I'll say I'm 100% certain it's your IAC valve. I could be wrong, but if it were my truck I'd be at the parts store already buying an IAC valve (after confirming it as I mentioned above).
