This first message is just a test. I want to see the difference between "Post Reply" (which is what I am doing now) and "Quick Reply" (which is what I usally do).

Redneck, tell me that's photo shop. Could a fan blade really stick through the hood?

The original question was "Is my engine overheating?" I've concluded that it is not.

I bought a new temperature sensor/sender since they are only $10. The gauge now goes more to hot side than with the old sensor. It pegs to right. See pic below.

On advice from this forum, I bought an infrared thermometer. (Fun to play with!) I realize that none of this will show the actual INTERNAL water temperature. The temperature on top of the block next to the temp sensor reads 170's. The temp at the thermostat housing read the same. The hose from the engine reads 160's. The top of the radiator reads 170's.

The water is flowing across the top of the radiator - implying that the water pump and thermostat both work. See movie below.

The pic below showing the thermostat was taken right after removing the hose with the engine hot. It looks to me like it is open.

So why would the gauge say "BURNING HOT!!"? There is a pic showing the wire going to sensor. Is that the right one?

Ok as I'm reading this, it is said you have a 1964 with a 292 is this correct?
If it is a 64 with a 292 I'm wondering about your instrument cluster. Did you install that one?
Hey N.D. When was the sweep cluster introduced? Wasn't it early 65? I've never seen one in a 64 unless installed by someone other than factory.
If this is the case, is the (*resistance) the same in the two different gauges?
*see below for meaning.

* =I have no idea what resistance means but it sounded good)

Yes they can. No that's not a photo shop. Somebody over on a Chevy forum had it happen.

From reading this thread, post #6 and on refers to a 292 in a 64 f100
I think from the very beginning, you should have posted what you have or think you have, and the VIN #
Your profile says you own a 64 f100
When you don't provide necessary information many people jump to your profile and ***-u-me, that what's in your profile is what your talking about.
A few threads made reference to a 292
At that point you should have cleared up my confusion.
Now your VIN say's 352 engine so, I guess were dealing with a 352 and not a 292

You left a number out of your VIN so we can't tell when your truck was made, but your engine is (or was when it left the factory) a 352 cubic inch FE V8, 2bbl, and your truck was built in San Jose, CA. Is your fuel guage playing up as well? If so, your gauge problem may be with the Instrument Voltage Regulator. I'm confused by your picture showing the red/white temp sensor wire possibly going to the coil? The red/white wire should go from the temp sensor, through the firewall junction to the temp gauge. Is that where yours is going? Good luck with your quest.

You sure it's a B and not an 8 (that makes sense for a '66)?

F10 = F100 2WD

Y = 352 2V

R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant

B62140 = 1967 .. assembled July 1966.

862140 = 1966 .. assembled May 1966.

1966 serial number range: 732,000 - 913,999 / 1967 serial number range: A00,001 - B99,999.

NumberDummy - I'm sure you are correct. The "B" is probably an "8". So I have a 352.

SuperSabre - There are three wires coming out of the bundle where the tape is unraveling. Before the split, the bundle of wires comes from the firewall.

Others - thanks for all of the laughs!

But ... does anyone know how to diagnose the temperature gauge?

Go to the 67-72 forum, look at the thread titled "Overheating Blues" page two. CougarJohn has outlined the way to get your gauge to read what is correct. Then do some research on it and you'll have a good idea how to get the gauge dialed in.

With an 8 in lieu of the B, you have a 1966 .. not a 1967. The Y VIN engine code...decodes to 352 2V for 1966 & 1967.
